A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore Aomori Prefecture at about 11:48 a.m. JST on Aug. 1, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Maximum JMA seismic intensity was 4 and the hypocentre was 80 km deep. The agency said there is no tsunami risk.
