India is seeking new preferential tariff terms from the U.S. to finalize an interim trade agreement, a senior Indian trade official told foreign media. New Delhi and Washington reached a preliminary accord in February, but talks slowed after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down broad tariff measures. The U.S. has proposed an additional 12.5% tariff on imports from India and other countries and is considering another levy targeting alleged textile overcapacity. The Indian official said a deal hinges on clarity over those tariffs, that rates be competitive with direct rivals, and that India secure U.S. assurances no further tariffs will be imposed after an agreement.
